Implant Aftercare
BACKAn implant has been placed in your jaw. Special care must be taken until the implant has healed in the next 3–4 months. If a sinus augmentation procedure was performed, the implant may take up to 6 months to heal.
- If an antibacterial mouth was prescribed, rinse for 30 seconds twice daily, starting the morning. Continue to rinse until your 2-week follow-up.
Note: Some rinses may cause temporary staining of your teeth. - Do not use a Sonicare or any other electric toothbrush on the healing abutment. It is ok to use an electric toothbrush on your other teeth the following morning.
- You may start to brush the implant with a regular toothbrush two weeks after the implant was placed.
- No drinking through a straw or sucking on anything for one week.
- It is very important to avoid chewing on the implant site during the healing period.
- Avoid smoking as studies have shown that it increases the risk for implant failure.
- Make sure you return to see us in one to two weeks for your follow-up appointment.
Strict adherence to these instructions will help ensure the success of your implant. Please call us at any time if you have any questions regarding your aftercare.
